Adrian Begg was just a 20-year-old officer with the Northern Rhodesian Police when he found himself at the crash site of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld’s plane near Ndola, Zambia. Begg’s own photographs of the crash have surfaced following the publication of Susan Williams’ book, Who Killed Hammarskjöld? The UN, the Cold War and White Supremacy in Africa, along with a spate of new evidence.
Begg has supplied his personal account of what happened at the crash:
It began as a normal, quiet Sunday shift at Ndola’s central police station, where I had been stationed as a young assistant inspector since completing my training six months earlier – but it soon became obvious there was something big on the go. Officers were being called in from home, and in the early afternoon I was sent with a squad of other officers to secure Ndola Airport and put it in security lockdown in readiness for VIP arrivals. The word quickly spread among us that Dag Hammarskjöld was expected.
My job was to secure the airport car park, outside the perimeter fence, and at one point I was ordered to stop the waiting media posse from following Katanga’s rebel leader Moise Tshombe, who was being taken to a nearby government residence to await Hammarskjöld’s arrival. As Tshombe’s car swept past I used the simple tactic of driving a police Land Rover across the road, forming an effective blockade which brought the media convoy to a screeching halt. It wasn’t a popular move – a couple of the journalists were mates of mine.

SLiPNet’s Wamuwi Mbao attended the CCR public dialogue and launch of McIntosh Polela’s memoir, My Father, My Monster. In his report of the event, Mbao says the CCR dialogue was a notch above the usual Cape Town book launches, with panellist Maureen Isaacson discussing the ways in which masculinities are forged “under conditions of violence and displacement”.
Mbao recalls how Isaacson drew links between Polela’s memoir and the trope of “gendered violence” that emerges in the memoirs of writers like Es’kia Mphahlele, (Down Second Avenue), Fred Khumalo (Touch My Blood) and Zakes Mda (Sometimes There Is a Void).
The Cape Town book launch scene moves in ebbs and waves: there’s a certain protocol to these events: a glowing introduction from an academic compère, followed by twenty minutes of pronouncements on the matters at hand from the author whose name appears on the circulated e-fliers. Thereafter, questions dribble in from people who haven’t read the book, but wish to venture opinions anyway.
This, thankfully, was not the scene at the Centre for the Book in Cape Town, where the Centre for Conflict Resolution, an august body that dabbles in things literary and academic, hosted a panel discussion around McIntosh Polela’s recently launched memoir, My Father, My Monster (Jacana, 2011). Polela is the journalist-turned spokesperson of the Hawks, an enigma and figure of mystery to South Africans who have puzzled over his Cary Grant-esque accent. Polela’s book was launched in September 2011, and has since enjoyed a healthy run on the book-launch circuits up and down the country. This event was one of the CCR’s well-attended public dialogues, where academics, authors and those in the general know meet to break bread, as Cornel West would put it.

“I am here to sell a fantasy. The minute that fantasy becomes a reality, I’ve got no more business. So it is in my interest not to cross the line from fantasy to reality.” – Lolly Jackson
The Lolly Jackson murder case – a mix of elements that has grabbed the public’s imagination. Fast cars, fast money, murder, revenge, missing millions and smashed up Teazers clubs. With kilometres of newspaper headlines and a growing body count, the insatiably curious public is still no closer to the truth.
Amidst the confusing reports, money laundering on a grand scale, SARS investigations and the mafia-like killings, Jacana Media brings you the inside story.
The book opens on the night of Lolly’s murder and is a personal, inside track into the reality of Lolly’s private and business lives, never before made public. Intimate and detailed, it provides the reader with a fascinating view of a world that previously could only be imagined.
About the authors
Sean Newman began working for Lolly a year before his death and became his confidant. He lived the Teazers brand and became integral in not only the day-to-day operations as media, marketing and public relations manager, but also as a keen observer of everything that really happened. While others wrote about the Teazers lifestyle, Newman lived it.
Peter Piegl was the editor of Playboy South Africa until mid-2011 and is the writing power behind the book. Piegl brings a critical and textured approach to the book.
Karyn Maughan is a legal journalist at eNEWS in Johannesburg with a degree in psychology. With a keen eye for the forensic details, Maughan examines the facts. She’s no stranger to controversy and the dark side of the human psyche.
