SRC Presidential Election Drama Described in Excerpt from Unimportance by Thando Mgqolozana

UnimportanceUnimportance by Thando Mgqolozana chronicles the agonizing twelve hours leading up to an SRC presidential caucus, with one of the candidates trying to balance his public persona with his private affairs.

GroundUp has shared an excerpt from the novel, where Zizi, the candidate and protagonist, is phoned by the administrative secretary of the SRC and asked to explain why he is late for the caucus.

Read the excerpt, which captures the adrenaline-filled moments before Zizi reveals his shocking manifesto to the rest of campus:

It is ten-on-the-head when my phone rings. I have been expecting alarm bells any moment from Wanga Sigila House, but until now I’ve been left in peace, as though the organisation has changed its mind about its preference for a president. When I answer the phone, I hear a familiar voice. It belongs to Vovo Malgas, the permanent administrative Secretary of the SRC, and more than any other individual, the most influential in the decisions of the SRC.

She says, “So you are not dead?”
