The Best of Zapiro’s 2014 Cartoons Collected in It’s Code Red!
New book from Jacana, It’s Code Red!, the latest collection of cartoons from Zapiro:
Zapiro needs no introduction. His 19th annual speaks for itself. No year would be complete without Zapiro’s annual collection of cartoons, and in this latest book of sharp-witted and well-timed cartoons, Zapiro once again proves himself a satirical genius, ensuring that no event passes by without comment … or a laugh.
“Zapiro makes a five-course meal of each and every cartoon-worthy moment, which we seem to have in abundance in SA.” – Business Day
“Zapiro’s eye for the follies and foibles of us all, not only those of us in South Africa, is as sharp as ever.” – Mercury
About the author
Born in Cape Town, Zapiro – aka Jonathan Shapiro – studied architecture at UCT before moving to the art campus, Michaelis. Following his two-year conscription in the army, he applied for and was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study cartooning at the School of Visual Arts in New York for two years.
The name Zapiro was derived from the nickname of a fellow pupil at Rondebosch Boys’ High School, Martin Szapiro, whose friends called him Zap. After Martin’s death, Zapiro adopted the name.
